Is Conventional Pet Food Passé?

Consumers spent $16 billion last year on food for their animals, but in the wake of the nation’s largest pet food recall there's been a rush to homemade fare. Now helping to meet the demand for "homemade" food are gourmet pet-food companies like The Honest Kitchen. Founded in 2002, the San Diego-based company makes dehydrated raw food using fresh, 100% human-grade ingredients. Check out these ingredients (notice the lack of cheap fillers and grains) : "USDA chicken, organic flaxseed, potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, apples, alfalfa, kelp, honey, zucchini, green beans, cabbage, bananas, papayas, yogurt, basil, garlic, rosemary, vitamins, minerals." Of course, this stuff isn't cheap. A 10-pound bag (equal to 43 pounds of dry kibble) is $71!
