An Overdue Honor

Soviet mutt Laika was the first living creature to orbit the earth, back in 1957. Unfortunately the 13-pond former stray did not survive the voyage. Her heroic sacrifice is finally being commemorated with a statue, near Moscow's Military Medicine Institute.

While Moscow's commemoration of Laika is long overdue, the first canine space traveler has been recognized and honored here in NYC by at least one knowing family. Laika, the 11 month-old sheba inu, and my first regular daycare dog, was named by her parents, Carol and John, in memory of her courageous name-sake. I first learned about the space orbiting Laika from Carol and John. Thanks, you two, and Urban Hound, for reminding us an incredible examle of hound heroics!
