Teacher, nurse, secretary -- add vet to the list of female-dominated professions. About 80% of applicants to vet schools around the country are women. Nobody knows why, but speculation is that men are less willing to accept the relatively low salaries (an average of about $75,000 compared with $175,000 for an internist). Plus, vet work generally makes it possible to arrange a flexible schedule in order to raise a family. Whatever the reason, this is one of the most dramatic shifts in gender patterns for any profession -- in the 1970s, three-quarters of vet students were men.
